Stigma is a negative belief or attitude that unfairly labels a person
as less capable, less professional, or less valuable because of a perceived difference.
A microaggression is a subtle comment or behaviour that communicates doubt, dismissal, or bias toward someone based on
that difference. It may appear in subtle ways, often unintentionally.
Examples include:
- Suggesting someone receives “special treatment”
- Jokes about sensitivity or social skills
- Questioning the legitimacy of adjustments
- Excluding someone from informal networks
Accommodations are not benefits. They are tools that allow equal participation.
Leaders play a critical role by:
- Addressing dismissive comments immediately
- Educating teams about inclusion
- Framing adjustments as part of equitable practice
- Modelling respectful language
Silence can reinforce stigma. Calm intervention reduces it.
Check the examples below to see how to respond if a microaggressive comment appears during a team meeting.
