Situation
The Foundation “Theotokos”, based in Athens, has long supported people with intellectual disabilities and autistic individuals in Greece. Despite education and vocational preparation, many autistic adults in Greece face significant barriers entering the open labor market. Employers often lack structured guidance on how to adapt recruitment, supervision and workplace communication. Traditional hiring processes tend to prioritize social fluency rather than task competence, creating exclusion even for highly capable candidates.
Action
Through its “ErgAxia” Supported Employment Service, the Foundation developed a structured pathway connecting neurodivergent candidates with employers in the open labour market. The service begins with structured vocational profiling to identify each person’s strengths, skills and support needs, followed by targeted workplace readiness preparation. At the same time, the organization approaches companies and collaborates with them to shape roles that match the candidate’s abilities, sometimes restructuring tasks to ensure clarity and focus. Employers receive practical guidance on providing clear instructions, predictable routines and structured feedback. During onboarding, a job coach may be present to support training and communication, gradually reducing involvement as the employee gains confidence and independence. Ongoing follow-up ensures that any challenges are addressed early. This approach connects directly to neurodiversity inclusion because it removes structural barriers such as unclear expectations and socially biased recruitment processes, replacing them with clarity, structure and practical support that enable long-term success in mainstream workplaces.
Result
The programme has enabled autistic and intellectually disabled adults to secure and maintain employment in retail, services and administrative roles. Employers report improved task consistency and reliability when roles are clearly structured. The key learning is that sustained inclusion requires parallel support: preparation of the employee and capacity-building of the employer. The model demonstrates that neurodiversity inclusion in Greece is achievable when structured supported employment bridges the gap between talent and workplace systems.
